Priyanka Chopra for Environment

There's a lot of fanfare about growth and development. It's real too. The amount of litter and plastic remnants around the localities indicates growth in retail and plastic business.  The number of superspeciality hospitals,  medical shops and patients indicates growth in health business. The replacement of soil, grass, ground covers and trees with concrete indicates growth in real estate business. The replacement of domestic animals with vehicles indicates growth in automobile industry. Making human beings physically inactive indicates growth in electrical and electronic business. One day sending out of humanity out of all services and industries will be the indication of growth in robotic business too.  Anyhow a great change is occurring for making some of our economists, planners and politicians feel happy that they are doing miracles to garner the support of voters.

It's said that this growth is for humanity only. But the incidents of torture against children, women and animals are also growing day by day. Along with life expectancy of human beings the pain and trauma due to degenerative diseases is also increasing. But many say that education will solve all these problems. But the results are quite different. The Mother Nature is not seem to be peaceful due to so many atrocities against its beloved creatures. Despite all this fuss still there's a ray of hope because of the  dedication being shown by some celebrities in humanistic activities.  One among them is Priyanka Chopra. She is an iconic Indian lady who is well-known not only as an actress, model and singer but also as a philanthropist and environmental activist. She has been an active participant for the cause of children, girl child, youth drug addiction,  leprosy, cancer patients, organ donations and many more.

Greenathon Ambassador:

She has been a brand ambassador for the NDTV-Toyota Greenathon started in 2008.  This is an initiative to support eco-friendliness especially in rural areas. The Greenathon helps in cleaning up rivers and recycling plastic bags. She appeared with children in an animated video to support the cause, and  removed rubbish from the banks of the Yamuna river in Agra. During the third and fourth editions of Greenathon she adopted up to seven villages.

Guardian of Zoo Animals:

Birsa Munda Zoological Park of Ranchi introduced a scheme for adoption of animals for a period of one year to 11 years. The scheme included donation of money for the upkeep of the animals and to create awareness about wildlife. Bollywood's 'junglee billi' Priyanka Chopra adopted a tigress Durga in 2011 and a 16-year-old lioness Sundari in 2012 at the Birsa Jaivik Udyan.

Ellie's Voice:

'Quantico' Star Priyanka Chopra Teamed With PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in 2015 to voice a 6.5-foot-tall walking-talking robotic elephant named "Ellie", who visited schools across the United States, Europe and India to educate kids about elephants and captivity, and to urge people to boycott circuses. The robotic elephant Ellie would speak to students and share her story via Priyanka Chopra’s voice. It gave a detailed explanation about painful separation from her mother as an infant, physical punishment endured in the circus in which it's kept chained, forced to learn tricks, deprived of all the things, but finally a happy life at a sanctuary after being rescued.

Swacch Bharat Abhiyan:

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi selected Priyanka Chopra as one of his nine nominees called "Navratna" in 2014 for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. She lent her whole-hearted support to the campaign by cleaning and rehabilitating a garbage-laden neighbourhood Versoa in Mumbai for 16 days. She chose the place in Versova which she visited during the shooting of her film "Agneepath". There she herself picked up the garbage, cleaned and beautified the area with some plants and made the residents happy. It's said that together with her team she could manage to dispose about eight trucks of garbage from there.

WED Challenge:

She was one of the Chinese and Indian stars to battle for World Environment Day (WED) competition on 5th June 2011. She faced off in that online competition to encourage members of the public to take up a green activity. In the run-up individuals, groups, families, schools and communities post-detailed of their green activities such as providing clean air, housing rich biodiversity, supplying water, etc. Priyanka pledged to plant a tree for every WED activity registered in her name.

We hope that the dedication and sincerity of celebritie like Priyanka Chopra would one day definitely bring a great change in the mindset of the society to get the pristine environment full of clean air, water and food back for the teaming millions of human populations across the drying planet. We can await for the renuvenation of the past glory in the wilderness too!
